Statement on Discontinuation of Oestrogen and Testosterone Implants

Members will be aware of the recent discontinuation of Oestrogen and Testosterone implants. For some individual women these have been an effective form of HRT. Currently there are no TGA approved implants.

Unlicensed implants without safety or efficacy data are being used overseas and in Australia.

The AMS Council does not endorse or support preparations which have no safety or efficacy data.

AMS Statement on Oestradiol Implants confirmed by the AMS Council (now Board), March 2012

The Australasian Menopause Society is aware that members have been sent leaflets advertising alternative implants made by compounding pharmacists. The AMS Council has reviewed the supporting clinical data from one of these sources and is unable to recommend the use of these implants at this time. For further information about bio-identical hormones please refer to AMS pamphlets: Bioidentical Hormones for Menopausal Symptoms .
